FREEDOM FIGHTERS is a story about a group of young activists who took down a Confederate statue in the South. It is part of the series Danny Demonstrates in which Lebanese/Dutch journalist Danny Ghosen dives into the world of global activism.
Danny is following the Freedom Fighters: activists who fight against white supremacy and racism. In Durham, North Carolina, he meets Takiya Thompson, the woman who actually put the rope around of the Confederate Statue before it went down, she is one of the main figures of the Freedom Fighters. Since that time Takiya receives death threats that made her go into hiding. The Freedom Fighter have an ongoing court case against them.
I was involved as a director and researcher.
In the months prior to filming we have researched many different activist groups in the US. We ended up in Durham South Carolina because there are a lot of activists coming from different social, ethnic and political backgrounds which provided us with the perfect story to tell during the Trump Presidency: the coming together of many different minorities to fight inequality.
